Semester GPA Calculator

Calculate your GPA for a single semester. Enter this term's courses, credit hours, and grades, and this semester GPA calculator returns your term average instantly.

Your semester GPA isolates one term's performance from the rest of your record. It is the number behind dean's list honors, semester-based scholarships, and academic standing decisions, and it is the clearest signal of whether your grades are trending up or down. This semester GPA calculator computes it from your courses in seconds.

Use it at midterms to project where the term is heading, at finals to confirm the outcome, or after grades post to check the official figure. The guide below covers the calculation, how semester GPA differs from cumulative GPA, and how to read trends across terms.

What is a semester GPA?

Semester GPA is your grade point average for one academic term: a fall or spring semester in college, or a marking period or semester in high school. It includes only the courses taken during that term, weighted by their credit hours, and nothing from any other term.

Schools use it as a short-term performance measure. Academic honors like the dean's list are typically awarded per semester, probation and standing decisions often hinge on term GPA, and some scholarships renew based on each semester's results rather than the cumulative average. It answers the question "how did I do this term," separate from "how have I done overall."

Because it covers fewer courses than a cumulative GPA, a semester GPA is more volatile: one bad grade in a 4-credit course swings a 15-credit term noticeably. That sensitivity makes it a useful early warning system, which is why tracking it term by term is worth the habit.

How semester GPA is calculated

The math is the standard GPA formula applied to a single term's courses: convert grades to grade points, multiply by credit hours, total the quality points, and divide by the term's total credits.

Formula: semester GPA = total quality points for the term ÷ total credit hours for the term.

Courses from other semesters are excluded entirely. Retakes from a previous term do not enter this term's calculation unless the retake itself happened this term, and transfer credits never belong in a semester GPA.

Worked example. A sophomore's fall semester:

  • Psychology: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12.0 quality points
  • Statistics: B (3.0) × 4 credits = 12.0 quality points
  • Literature: C+ (2.3) × 3 credits = 6.9 quality points
  • Chemistry: A- (3.7) × 3 credits = 11.1 quality points

Total quality points: 12.0 + 12.0 + 6.9 + 11.1 = 42.0. Total credits: 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13. Semester GPA = 42.0 ÷ 13 = 3.23. Enter these four courses in the semester GPA calculator above to verify the 3.23, then try swapping the Literature grade to a B to see how one course moves a whole term.

For a weighted version, mark AP, IB, or honors courses and switch the scale toggle: the semester GPA calculator applies the standard +1.0 and +0.5 bonuses on the 5.0 scale.

Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA

The two numbers tell different stories. Semester GPA is the short story of one term; cumulative GPA is the novel of your whole record. A 3.8 semester GPA as a senior barely moves a cumulative average built over seven prior terms, but it matters enormously on its own: it can earn dean's list recognition, satisfy a scholarship's term requirement, and signal to graduate schools that you finished strong.

The relationship runs through credit weighting. Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted combination of all your semester GPAs, so each term contributes in proportion to its credits. Our cumulative GPA calculator shows how your semesters combine, while this page's tool isolates any single one.

Watch the two together over time. A semester GPA consistently above your cumulative average means the overall number is climbing. A semester GPA below it means the cumulative figure is drifting down, even if it still looks respectable. That trend is often visible a full year before the cumulative GPA itself looks alarming.

Why track your GPA semester by semester?

Most students only check their GPA when an application demands it, which wastes the number's best use: feedback. A semester GPA is feedback on a timescale you can still act on. Checking it at midterms, with projected final grades, shows whether the term is on track while there are still weeks to change it.

Term-by-term tracking also reveals patterns. Some students consistently earn their lowest grades in the fall and rebound in spring, or struggle specifically in lab-heavy semesters. Spotting the pattern lets you plan around it: lighter loads in tough terms, harder courses when your history says you perform best.

Finally, several practical thresholds operate per semester. Dean's list cutoffs, which many schools set around 3.5 for the term, are semester-based. Academic probation is often triggered by a single bad term. And some merit scholarships require a minimum GPA each semester, not just cumulatively. Knowing your semester GPA before grades post means no surprises.

Projecting your semester GPA before finals

The most valuable use of a semester GPA calculator is forward-looking. Partway through the term, enter your courses with the grades you have so far, then duplicate the entry with the grades you expect on remaining work. The gap between your current projection and your target tells you exactly how much the remaining assessments matter.

Worked example. With three courses finished at A, B+, and B (4.0, 3.3, 3.0 across 3 credits each = 30.9 points over 9 credits) and a 4-credit final course still open, the projection depends entirely on that last grade. An A in the final course gives (30.9 + 16.0) ÷ 13 = 3.61. A B gives (30.9 + 12.0) ÷ 13 = 3.30. A C+ gives (30.9 + 9.2) ÷ 13 = 3.08. One course, three futures, and now you know exactly what each requires.

Run these scenarios in the semester GPA calculator above by entering the finished courses with actual grades and the open course with each hypothetical grade. It takes seconds and replaces vague worry with a concrete target.

Semester GPA and academic standing

Colleges use semester GPA as a trigger for academic standing decisions. A single term below a threshold, commonly 2.0, can place a student on academic probation, which usually means a warning term to recover before stricter consequences like suspension. The exact rules vary, but the pattern is consistent: the institution reacts to the semester figure first, because it reflects current performance rather than history.

This makes the semester GPA the number to watch if you are struggling. A student with a comfortable 3.2 cumulative GPA might ignore a disastrous term, assuming the overall record protects them, and be surprised by a probation notice. The cumulative average hides the trend; the semester figure reveals it. Checking your projected semester GPA before finals, rather than discovering it on the grade report, gives you the chance to intervene while office hours, tutoring, and extra credit are still available.

The reverse is equally true. A student on probation who earns a strong semester GPA has documented recovery, which is typically what lifts the probation status. Probation terms often come with requirements like meeting an advisor or limiting credits, and the semester GPA at the end is the evidence that the plan worked. In both directions, the term number is the one that drives decisions, which is why it deserves its own calculation rather than a glance at the cumulative average.

How to use this semester GPA calculator

Open the GPA tab and enter only the current term's courses: name, letter grade, credit hours, and course level for the weighted scale if applicable. Click + Add course for each class, then Calculate GPA. The result is your semester GPA.

For midterms projections, enter completed work with actual grades and remaining courses with your best estimates, then refine the estimates as the term progresses. Use Share result to save a snapshot of each projection so you can compare them later.

To see how the term affects your overall record, take the semester GPA and credit total into the cumulative GPA calculator, or simply enter all terms' courses there at once.

Semester GPA calculator FAQs

How do I calculate my semester GPA?

Include only the current term's courses. Convert each grade to grade points, multiply by credit hours, add up the quality points, and divide by the term's total credits. The semester GPA calculator above does this when you enter a single term's courses.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA covers one term; cumulative GPA covers your entire record, credit-weighted across all terms. Colleges usually ask for the cumulative figure, while honors like the dean's list are awarded per semester. See our cumulative GPA calculator for the full-record version.

Can one bad grade ruin my semester GPA?

It hurts, but "ruin" overstates it. In a 15-credit term, one 3-credit F costs roughly 0.8 GPA points versus straight As, because the other 12 credits cushion it. The damage scales with the course's credits: a 4-credit failure stings more than a 1-credit one. Enter your actual courses in the semester GPA calculator to see your real number instead of fearing the worst.

What semester GPA do I need for the dean's list?

Cutoffs vary by school; many set the bar around 3.5 for the term, sometimes with a minimum credit requirement such as 12 graded credits. Check your school's academic catalog for the exact threshold, since it differs widely.

Does summer session count as a semester?

Usually summer courses count toward your cumulative GPA, and many schools compute a separate summer term GPA as well. Whether it is labeled a "semester" for honors purposes varies. For the calculation itself, treat it as its own term in the semester GPA calculator.

How do I project my GPA before grades are final?

Enter finished courses with actual grades and open courses with estimated grades in the semester GPA calculator. Try a range of estimates (optimistic, realistic, pessimistic) to see the band of likely outcomes, then focus your study time where the projection shows the most leverage.

Do withdrawals affect semester GPA?

A standard withdrawal (W) is usually excluded from GPA entirely. A withdrawal-failing (WF) may count as an F at some schools. Neither earns quality points, so confirm your school's policy if you have a W on the term.

Is this semester GPA calculator accurate?

Yes, for the term's courses as entered. Include every graded course from the semester with correct credit hours, match your school's grade scale, and the result will agree with your official term GPA. See our disclaimer.
